Empowering the Silent Voices: A Journey from Trauma to Triumph for the Neurodiverse

Yesterday I watched a programme where Christine McGuiness bravely shared the impacts of her late autism diagnosis aged 33. I believe it was called “Unmasking My Autism”.

I can so relate to her story, as I watched the programme, I recalled many memories of when predators had taken advantage of my innocence and naivety. Putting it bluntly, I didnt recognise the signs, so when bad things happened, a near abduction, stopped from getting off a train at my station, date rape, and other scenarios, I blamed my tender self, and reduced my eating, self care, and engagement with others out of self hatred and shame. I regressed to an earlier set of behaviours that I had adopted as a pre-school child, and became a different form of selective mutism.

I am so energised by these memories, that I want to put together a tool box of strategies, which support neurodiverse, and highly sensitive individuals, to build on their current levels of emotional, social, spatial, creative, intuitive intelligences, and know their bespoke purpose, so they in turn, can grow into their true selves, and impact others further down the timeline.

Memory is a complicated thing, a relative to truth, but not its twin.  – Barbara Kingsolver

Trauma isn’t what happened to you, it is what happens inside you – Gabor Mate

Forgive yourself for what you think you’ve done, or not done. At every moment you had your reasons for all your actions and decisions. You’ve always done the best thing you can do. Forgive Yourself. – Doreen Virtue

I am willing to draw on my personal and professional lived experiences, and supported trainings, to help others, find the neurodiverse, or highly sensitive person path less challenging than I have had to, prior to finding my own teachers along the way.
